Teachers at all levels talk about having a passion for teaching. And it's true. You have to have a passion for teaching if you're an educator of any sort. We sure don't get rich doing this! Teaching is arguably one of the noblest of all professions, but potential income for educators is generally not on a spectrum befitting nobility. No, we teach because it is a calling, and if you can figure out how to make a living in this field, please let me know! I am always open to new things! And it would help with stress! But then there's real life. Don't worry, I'll share my thoughts on teacher pay down the road here...
To be sure, having a passion for teaching is a requisite, but in my opinion, it's only a piece of the pie. I believe it's equally critical to want and be able to instill a passion for learning within students, whoever they are. You can be the world's best educator, but if your students aren't invested and passionate about learning, it's going to be an uphill battle at best. And that's the kicker. Despite what anybody tries to tell you to, all students can, and will learn. It might not always be at the rate that is expected or desired, but when they are invested, when they care, when they're interested, when they're passionate about learning, they certainly will. And they will succeed. So don't judge your success on how well you're disseminating information. Judge your success on how passionate your students are to continue learning. And give them some voice and choice! More on that soon, be sure to check back regularly!
